Sketching for CHANEL – a live in store event

The best way to launch limited edition CHANEL Eyeshadow Palettes is to mark the moment with personalised illustrations of each guest's eye, also using the eyeshadow itself. Of course.

I’m really in love with sketching figures and portraits. It focuses on the unique beauty and features of a person as I realy them in my specific artistic style.

So, I was delighted when CHANEL approached me to take it even closer at their new store in Canal Walk, Cape Town. They asked me to sketch the eye of each guest for the launch of their limited edition Les 4 Ombres Bouton eyeshadow palettes.

I sketched and practiced some examples to present to the client for approval and as the day arrived, I packed my case with all the colours and shades I might need.
Little did I know that one of my art materials was waiting for me in store. Yes, I had the privilege and creative freedom to use the eyeshadow palettes on the sketches themselves.

Throughout the day various VIP clients stepped into the store at different time slots. While they were introduced to the new product and reconnected with their CHANEL friends, I sketched their eyes from photos I took when they arrived.

Along with a goody bag they could then take their sketch home. Our eyes are something we take for granted but bears the special stories viewed through them. And it was a beautiful moment reminding each guest of this.

Thus far this was my most emotional illustration event to date and can’t wait to sketch more creative ideas and remind people of how lovely they already are!

The eye illustrations,  were done live but had a realistic quality to them. Each one were completed within the colour palette of the Les 4 Ombres eyeshadow of the client’s choice. The eyeshadow itself was used in combination with alcohol markers, colour pencils, fine liner and white markers. The final touch was writing the guest’s name together with the name of the colour palette: Mademoiselle, Stellaire, Couture and Baroque.

NOT JUST A PRETTY PICTURE...

My heart has always been to create beautiful fashion illustrations conveying the character of a garment, but in the process of refining this skill it became about something more. It’s about telling the story, sharing the emotion and imparting the observed beauty  into a work of art. What better way to retell these moments than with the art of fashion and live event sketching.
